Well, apparently 100 million people have.

Vanilla Ice is currently on tour in South Africa. Yesterday, Die Burger, an Afrikaans daily, reported that Mr Ice claims to have sold “more than 100 million albums” worldwide during a career thaYep, he even had his own movie. Not sure if 100 million people have watched it, though.t can at best be described as “patchy”.

If this claim is true, it means that the man also known as Rap van Winkle is part of a select group of “artists” who have topped the 100 million sales mark. This group includes Billy Joel, Julio Iglesias, Metallica and, of course, Michael Jackson. It goes without saying that the one thing that these artists have in common is that they’ve all had more than one hit.

Ice is best known for his solitary hit “Ice Ice Baby” (which DID NOT, y’hear, sample the bass-line from Bowie’s “Under Pressure” without paying royalties).

The episode of VH1’s Behind the Music documenting his meteoric rise to fame and inevitable relegation to life’s bargain bin was recently voted as the most depressing show ever aired on the channel.

He will be signing autographs at the Brackenfell Mall tomorrow from 12:00 to 15:00.

A cynic like yours truly is often baffled by people’s willingness to take up “causes”, as long as it does not demand anything more taxing than clicking a mouse button. Sometimes even this is too much effort (I am not considering the possibility that people have given up online causes for real-world causes) as is apparent from the failure of the Facebook group 1 Million People for Haiti to gain more than 8000 members at the time of this post. http://www.facebook.com/#/group.php?gid=46558258426&ref=search&sid=543036620.993025715..1
